2008 Field Trip # 4:   Duluth Area Field Trip and
The Moose Lake State Park, Agate Interpretive Center

WHERE AND HOW: 

Gather by 8:30 AM at Moose Lake State Park, 
      at the Agate and Geological Interpretive Center 
                4252 County Road 137 
                Moose Lake, MN  55767 

Located east of I-35N at the Moose Lake exit #214. Map The park entrance is  
off County Road 137.  Take the Moose Lake exit off I-35, and go east on  
County Road 137 until you see the park signs about 1/2 mile along the 
road. We will have the park and building open shortly after 8 AM that day. 
A daily state park permit is $5.00/vehicle, but a group rate may be 
$3.00/vehicle, if we have enough cars in the group, specifically ten. 
(Participants might choose to carpool here and re-disperse at the end of 
the trip).  Bring a bag lunch and beverage.  You will sign a waiver of liability
prior to the trip. 

HIGHLIGHTS: 

1)  Moose Lake State Park, the Agate and Geological Interpretive Center 

2)  Thomson Dam – deformed slates of the Thomson Formation 

3)  Grandview Golf Course site – base of the North Shore Volcanics 

4)  Bardon Peak – Duluth Complex gabbro 

5)  Thomson Hill Rest area –  lunch and more gabbro 
      We will try to persuade Miller to tell us about the status of PolyMet  
      Mining Corp. and the activity near Hoyt Lakes in platinum group metals. 

6)  47th Ave Quarry – anorthositic phase of the Duluth Complex 

7)  Observation tower Hill – top of the Duluth Complex 

8)  Duluth Clinic outcrop -porphyritic basalts of the North Shore 
     Volcanics 

9)  Leif Erickson park – interflow sandstone and lavas 

    (Trip ends at 5PM) 

COST:  Cost will be $17/person or, if there is good attendance, even less. 
This pays for travel costs, honorarium, and lunch, for the leader.   
A field guide will be e-mailed to participants prior to the trip, 
and snail-mailed to those participants without e-mail or without printer. 

People seem to find useful the option of reviewing the field guide prior to 
the trip.
