ST. CLOUD AREA GRANITE FORMATIONS
Date: Saturday, May 22, 2004 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (roughly 8 hour trip)
Leader: Terry Boerboom, MN Geological Survey
HIGHLIGHTS: This trip will focus on the various granite formations in the St. Cloud area. Stops planned include quarry sites (dimension stone quarries containing spectacular exposures of the granite that are cut by diabase dikes) outcrops that feature St. Cloud red granite, Reformatory granodiorite, glacially polished and striated outcrops, Rockville Granite, saprolite, corestones, glacially induced thrust faults, cretaceous shale with gypsum crystals (which we can collect) and perhaps Richmond granite which is a unique green charnockitic granite.
WHEN AND HOW: We will meet at Guardian School Bus Company (2779 Highway 10 S) located just southeast of St. Cloud.** This is where we will load the bus and where we will leave the cars. Check-in begins 8:30 a.m. Please arrive early to allow for timely departure at 9:00 a.m. (Due to limited parking at road cuts, no private vehicles allowed on this trip.) Everyone gets to ride with the leader!!

Due to the special charter of the bus for this trip, space is limited. Participation is limited to 40 participants and will be based on a first-registered/paid, first-seated arrangement. To make sure we maximize capacity, payment in advance is required. No registrations/payments can be accepted the day of the field trip.
COST: Cost of the field trip includes the bus charter cost–$15 per member. Non-members pay an additional $5 fee. Registration/payment must be received by the deadline Thursday May 20. When 40 seats have been reserved, a waiting list will be started.

PREPARATION: Come prepared for any type of weather and terrain. Each field trip participant will be required to sign a waiver of liability prior to the start of the field trip. This is scheduled to be an all day trip. You may bring a bag lunch and there will be opportunities to buy fast or convenience food.
–Out of Twin Cities area, take 94W heading NW towards St. Cloud. Take the Clearwater exit and follow MN 24 northeast to Clear Lake and Hiway 10. Get on Hiway 10 heading west towards St. Cloud. After you pass through Cable, you will cross County Hiway 3, 32nd St. SE and 31st St SE.
Watch on right hand side for sign for Guardian Bus Co or a yellow school bus marking the driveway. Turn into the driveway to the parking lot.
–Out of Twin Cities area, follow Hiway 10 NW towards St. Cloud. After you pass through Cable the directions are the same as above.
