Content :
Hello David, once again, we welcome members of the MGS to our program!
Jutta Dudley
You are invited to the Rochester Academy of Science Mineral Section meeting on Tuesday, November 22 at 7 pm EST (6pm CST) via Zoom.
Join us for a look inside the planet Mars with geologist Dr. Nicholas Warner, a participating scientist with the InSight Mission.
Below is information about the presentation and the Zoom link:
The Presentation:
The InSight mission landed on Mars in November of 2018 and is nearing the end of its proposed mission. The objectives of this mission are to determine the interior structure and heat flow of the planet Mars with the hopes of better understanding how all rocky planets form and evolve. The mission is equipped with a seismometer, heat flow probe, radio tracking device, and advanced weather monitoring equipment. Since 2018, the mission has detected numerous quakes that, for the first time, have revealed the level of seismicity and interior of another planet. Some of these quakes are tectonic in origin while others are related to recent meteorite impacts. The mission has also probed the Martian regolith and bedrock, detailing the shallow structure and geology of the martian northern plains. Now, near the end of the mission, InSight struggles with dust and power management. This talk will detail the major results and operations of InSight from the perspective of a participating geologist on the mission.
About our speaker:
Dr. Nicholas Warner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at SUNY Geneseo. He is also a NASA contractor and Participating Scientist on the InSight mission. Before Geneseo, Warner was a NASA Postdoctoral Fellow where he helped select landing sites for the Curiosity rover, InSight lander, and Perseverance rover. He also participated in mission operations for the Opportunity rover. Warner earned his PhD from Arizona State University, M.S. from University of Buffalo, and B.A. in geology from SUNY Geneseo.
